Bleigießen und Brotbacken

Auch Bleigießen ist hier unbekannt. In Deutschland ist die Molybdomantie, wie das Wahrsagen mit dem Blei ganz richtig heißt, ein beliebter, wenn auch nicht ganz ernst gemeinter Sylvesterbrauch. Woher der diese Art der Wahrsagerei genau stammt ist nicht bekannt. Fest steht nur, dass sie sowohl den alten Griechen als auch bei den Römern praktiziert wurde.

In Deuschland hat das Bleiorakel im Mittelalter große Verbreitung gefunden. Vor allem zu Sankt Martin am 11. November und zu Andreas am 30. November wurde es zu Rate gezogen. An diesen Tagen wurde traditionell neues Dienstpersonal von den Herrschaften eingestellt - oder eben auch entlassen. So befragten die Knechte und Mägde in Sorge um ihre Zukunft ein Orakel.

Im 18. Jahrhundert verkam das Bleigiessen zu einem harmlosen Gesellschaftsspiel. Als Sylvesterbrauch ist es seit den 50er Jahren ein scherzhafter Versuch vorauszusehen was das Neue Jahr so bringt.

Bei uns: Ein Löwe, ein Eichhörnchen, eine Giraffe und eine Ente.



Und laut meinem Horoskop einen Brotbackautomaten.

  1. I am trying to learn German entirely from reading your blog. It is not easy, but I thought I was doing okay until I got to the giraffe. All I have to work from is a couple of terms at evening classes. Giraffes were never mentioned, not once.

  2. You can use Babel Fish to translate the whole text or the whole website, though this translations are often hilarious.
    If I need to look up some words I use http://www.dict.cc/
    which leads to some other translation engines if it has got nothing to offer.
    But the easiest thing is the add-on of my browser, you just klick at the word and you get a proper translation in an instant.
    Not really needed for giraffe by the way, Eichhörnchen is a little more tricky.
