Restraint - dance for camera piece

The latest  dance film by my partner John Coombes is online now. It's so special to show the final version of this piece. It was planned, rehearsed, filmed and edited over such a long period of time, I can't quite believe that it's finished now. I got so used to hear the wonderful music coming out of the studio and John's office over the last few months.

RESTRAINT from John Coombes on Vimeo.
The Spirit is free, she has shed her social inhibitions, she has shed her anger, she has shed her clothes, she lives free, nothing restrains her. But, without anything to fight against, to strain against, she has no drive, no objectives, no passion.

UPDATE: 14600 hits in the first week! YAY!

Trapezius

You can now watch "Trapezius", a dance film I worked on, in full length:

TRAPEZIUS from John Coombes on Vimeo.

John planned this film using one of his paintings as a starting point. He filled lots and lots of pages with his exquisite drawings, scribbles and notes and created an amazing storyboard.

While we were in amongst the preparations, building the set, holding auditions, doing various test shoots and trying lots of different lighting options, we went to the farewell party of our friends Wayne and Fran who were going to live in Australia for six months. I sneaked out the back door for a cigarette [I used to smoke occasionally] and met Ian Sanderson, which, it turned out, was a wonderful coincidence. He said he was a musician. I said we were looking for a musician for a dance film. He said he was very interested in writing music for a film.

He wrote the most beautiful tunes and came up with wonderful arrangements.

Ian tailored his music around Johns images and John cut the pictures to Ian's music. I learned a lot whilst watching the amazing process of editing the piece. Oh, and by then I have also learnt that Ian is part of the Urban Myth Club, and that his sound samples have been used by hundreds of artists including Massive Attack, Lemon Jelly, the Prodigy and Beastie Boys. It was a pleasure working with him.

Trapezius

TRAPEZIUS, John’s most recent dance film, has been accepted at two more festivals.

It will be screened most nights from 7th Feb 2010 to 4th April 2010 at Xtend IV, in South Hill Park Arts Centre, Bracknell, as part of their LIFT OFF! dance festival this spring.

First we have been told that it would be part of a larger showreel of dance films, but then the festival director liked it so much, TRAPEZIUS is now being featured on it’s own screen.

It will also be screened at Phoenix Picture House, Oxford at a special screening event alongside a new commissioned work for “Dance Festival - DANCIN' OXFORD.” on 21st March 2010.

And here are some images of me preparing the backdrops used in this film.

Dança em Foco

Hooray! The short dance film "Trapezius" of my sweetheart John was selected to be shown at dança em foco, the international dance film festival in Rio de Janeiro.

Congratulations to John! This is the third year one of his films has been in this festival.

I did a lot of work on this film as well so I feel a little proud myself. :)

Trapezius

I really enjoyed to work with all these wonderful people on this wonderful film. I hope you'll enjoy watching the trailer!

“It isn’t much fun for one, but two can stick together”

Over 20 muscle groups control the movement of the upper body and shoulders.

Two dusty white figures turn and twist in the narrow, black, dark wilderness of the film-frame. They flex their muscles and show off their skills. Hesitant at first, they finally come together. They echo and tease each other, exploring the space between them until they become entwined as one. They come alive together, but it can’t last. They argue, they fight and their relationship collapses into chaos.

Jim Bond

Atomised, a sculpture by Jim Bond

I hope you enjoy all the buzzes and clicks, as I have been the sound recordist on this film!

I found another film on Jim Bonds website. Here it is, Art in perpetual motion, a Reuters video about Kinetica with Jim's sculpture "Blink" in it.

Applause Machine

Today we have been filming Martin's Applause Machines for Laikingland.

The Applause Machine can be purchased on their website. It comes in the most vibrant colours. My favourite is the orange one!
"Traffic Orange". I love it.

Evets

Steve Evets spielt die Hauptrolle im neuen Film von Ken Loach, Looking for Eric. Letzte Woche wurden die Dreharbeiten beendet. Gedreht wurde seit Anfang Mai in Manchester. Steve spielt Eric, einen Manchester United Fan, und Fußball-Legende Éric Cantona wird auch auftreten. Mehr darf noch nicht verraten werden.

Mehr Bilder mit Steve:

Freitag abend

"The way you do", sagt John.

Beides gibts hier.

Preview

I got my name in lights with notcelebrity.co.uk

Though the film contains strong language and some nudity it would pass the "Mull of Kintyre-Test"*.
